Education/Training Requirements
A high school education is desireable and should, if possible, included courses in basic math, shop, mechanical drawing and carpentry.   On the job training and formal training programs are the usual methods of entry into the field. Many take vocational education courses and work informally under other skilled workers and learn that way.  However, the most desireable entry is through an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships may be offered and administered through union-management or independent associations-management.  for example,  the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Joiners of America, Associated General Contractors, National Association of Home Builders in the USA.   In addition, training programs may be adminstered by local chapters of the Associated Builders and Contractors and other interested groups.
